The Nilgiris District Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, inspected the micro-fertilizer centre, resource recovery centre in Khandal and the landfill in Theetukkal in Udhagamandalam on Thursday.

During the inspection, the Collector studied the waste collection procedure followed across 36 wards in Udhagamandalam Municipality, and how the collected waste was being processed and recycled.

The Collector then spoke to municipality workers, informing them that they had to undertake door-to-door collection of waste across the municipality, and spread awareness among the public that they had to segregate waste into degradable and non-biodegradable waste before handing it over to workers. The Collector also added that waste collection bins were to be installed at important tourist locations to ensure that they were kept clean and that awareness campaigns must be undertaken to ensure that people, especially tourist visitors do not litter.

Ms. Tanneeru also instructed municipality officials to ensure that waste was not allowed to decompose at the Theetukkal dumpyard, and that degradable waste was sent to processing centers where it can be converted to compost ,and non-biodegradable waste was recycled, like at cement factories, to prevent the dumpyard from filling up.

Officials from the Udhagamandalam Municipality were present during the inspection.
