A patient with chondrosarcoma sternum, a rare and complex form of bone cancer, was recently treated in a city hospital.
The patient underwent a 3D neo-sternum reconstruction using a custom-designed titanium implant. Chondrosarcoma sternum is a cartilage-forming tumour originating from the breastbone, and often untreatable. The slow growing cancer has the potential to spread to lungs and other parts of the body. The condition is challenging to diagnose and the surgical complexity with potential complications post-surgery could lead to chest wall instability and breathing disturbances.
Surgical oncologist Kenny Robert J., who performed the procedure at Meridian hospital here recently said the patient underwent a 3D reconstruction of the sternum bone using titanium. The innovative approach allowed for a more physiological reconstruction, enabling the patient to breathe normally and return to daily activities without restrictions.
He added that even oncologists working in high-volume centres might encounter only 8 or 9 such cases in their lifetime. The challenge is not just in removing the tumour but also reconstructing the vital flat bone, integral to the thoracic cavity’s functions, including respiration.
Within 10 days of surgery the patient was discharged with no would infections or prolonged ventilation.
