Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, is under scrutiny as Shivaji Maharaj’s descendant urges filmmakers to consult historians for accuracy.
The highly anticipated historical drama Chhaava, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is drawing closer to its release. With Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, the film’s trailer was recently unveiled, garnering significant buzz. However, the movie has sparked a discussion about historical accuracy, as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s descendant has urged the filmmakers to consult historians to address potential inaccuracies.
In an interaction with PTI, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and former Rajya Sabha MP, praised the film for spotlighting the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He revealed that director Laxman Utekar had shared the trailer with him, and while he appreciated the effort, he expressed his desire to watch the full film before its release. “I also offered to connect them with historians to address inaccuracies to ensure this significant story is presented authentically to audiences worldwide,” he stated.
Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati also highlighted specific concerns about historical liberties, citing the lezim dance sequence shown in the trailer. While recognizing the cultural significance of lezim, he questioned its portrayal in the context of Sambhaji Maharaj’s dignity and legacy. He emphasized the need for experts to weigh in on the appropriateness of such creative choices.
Prior to the trailer’s release, the makers had unveiled individual character posters, building anticipation among audiences. Vicky Kaushal steps into the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Rashmika Mandanna portrays Maharani Yesubai, and Akshaye Khanna takes on the role of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The film also features an ensemble cast including Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Vineet Kumar Singh, Diana Penty, and Santosh Juvekar.
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava boasts a musical score by AR Rahman. With its Valentine’s Day release set for February 14, 2025, the movie has already created significant excitement among audiences eager to witness this grand historical drama on the silver screen.
