The Tamil Nadu government should ask the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to make changes in the online system so that micro units pay electricity tariff applicable under classification III A (1), said K. Annamalai, State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Mr. Annamalai said in a press release that there are 52,367 micro units in Coimbatore district that have less than 12 KW connected load. These units currently pay ₹9.60 a unit while they should pay only ₹4.65 a unit under tariff classification III A (1). The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) said in September 2023 that the units with less than 12 KW load are eligible for tariff under III A (1).

However, for close to one-and-a-half years, the Tangedco is collecting tariff under classification III (B), asking the micro units to apply for tariff re-classification.

The Tangedco and the Tamil Nadu government should make changes in the online system so that the micro industries pay tariff under tariff III A (1). The government made false promises to the industries and was not heeding to their demands on lowering the power tariff, he alleged.
