With just over a week left until the highly anticipated release of Captain America: Brave New World, Marvel fans are gearing up to see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson officially don the stars and stripes on the big screen. This marks the first Captain America film of 2025 and the first time Wilson takes on the mantle in a solo outing. However, longtime MCU enthusiasts know that Captain America was more than just a title, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was also the moral compass and leader of The Avengers throughout the Infinity Saga. Even Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) acknowledged his leadership, famously quipping, “Oh he’s the boss. I just pay for everything.”
During a recent conversation with Collider’s Garrett Blaney, Brave New World director Julius Onah shed some light on Sam Wilson’s future within The Avengers and whether he’s stepping up as the team’s new leader. While he didn’t reveal too much, his response was certainly promising.
“All I’ll say is, right now my heart and soul is in this film, but I think this is a movie that cements Captain America and Sam Wilson as our new Captain America as a leader of the Avengers going forward. So I’m just really excited about getting this out in the world,” he said.
While Wilson may not possess super-soldier serum-enhanced strength, that hardly disqualifies him from leading Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. After all, Steve Rogers himself was never the strongest Avenger, yet his courage, strategy and leadership made him the glue that held the team together. Throughout his journey, Sam has proven himself time and again, battling formidable foes like The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and even facing off against Thanos (Josh Brolin). However, Brave New World is set to push him further than ever before as he goes head-to-head with the Red Hulk (Harrison Ford), who also happens to be the President of the United States, informs Collider.
Marvel Studios has yet to release an official lineup for the next generation of Avengers, but there are already strong contenders. In addition to Mackie’s Captain America, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is expected to play a significant role in both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is also likely to return, bringing her cosmic power to the fight against Doctor Doom and whatever other threats lie ahead.
Kevin Feige has reportedly confirmed that all four members of the Fantastic Four – Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), will be part of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Given their long-standing history with Doctor Doom, they’re bound to be major players. And of course, no Avengers team feels complete without Spider-Man (Tom Holland), though his involvement has yet to be officially confirmed.
With so many moving pieces, one thing is certain: the MCU is entering an exciting new era and Sam Wilson’s Captain America is at the forefront. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see what’s in store when Captain America: Brave New World hits theatres on February 14.
