The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has issued a new order banning the use of potable water for non-essential purposes in the city ahead of summer. Last year, the BWSSB placed a similar ban in March 2024 owing to a water crisis.
The BWSSB has said that owing to rapid urbanisation and the population growth exceeding 10 million, the demand for water in Bengaluru has increased significantly, emphasising the need for efficient management and stricter regulations to prevent wastage and misuse.
According to the order, potable water should not be used for washing cars, watering gardens, construction of buildings and roads. Malls and other business establishments can only use potable water for drinking purposes.
Violations will attract a fine of ₹5,000 per offence, with an additional penalty of ₹500 per day for continued violations.
