The Assam State Election Commission on Wednesday (April 2, 2025) announced the dates of the panchayat polls, billed as a test of the popularity of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies ahead of the Assembly elections in 2026.
The announcement coincided with the election to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council held across significant portions of the Kamrup and Goalpara districts.
“The panchayat election will be held in two phases – on May 2 and May 7. The first phase of the election will be held in Upper Assam (eastern half of the State) and the Barak Valley, while the second phase will be across Lower Assam (western half),” Election Commissioner Alok Kumar said.
He said 1.8 crore voters – 90.71 lakh males, 89.65 lakh females, and 408 others – are expected to exercise their franchise across 25,007 polling stations.
“The number of voters increased by 13.27% since 2018. The number of polling stations, likewise, has increased by 6%,” Mr. Kumar said.
The voters will elect 21,920 gram panchayat (GP) members, 2,192 GP presidents, 2,192 GP vice-presidents and 2,192 anchalik panchayat (AP) members, 181 AP presidents, 181 AP vice-presidents and 397 zila panchayat members.
The results will be announced on May 11.
