Assam: Congress Stages Protest Over Attack On MP Rakibul Hussain In Nagaon

Guwahati, Feb 21: Congress legislators in Assam staged a protest at the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday, condemning the recent attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain in the Rupahihat area of Nagaon district. The protestors also moved an adjournment motion to discuss the issue in the ongoing Budget session, but Speaker Biswajit Daimary rejected the motion, leading to a brief adjournment of the assembly.

The Congress party demanded strict action against the attackers, with legislators displaying placards criticizing the state government. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia called the incident “unfortunate” and “alarming,” stating that despite prior information being given to the Nagaon District Police, the attack occurred in broad daylight. He expressed concerns about rising political violence in Assam and urged the government to ensure the safety of all citizens, including those opposing the government.

The attack on Hussain took place on Thursday afternoon when miscreants stopped the MP while he was en route to a meeting in Rupahihat. Nagaon SP Swapaneel Deka confirmed that the MP was confronted and assaulted but was rescued by his Personal Security Officer (PSO), who fired in the air to disperse the attackers.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later confirmed that the police had identified those involved in the assault on MP Rakibul Hussain.
