Bhupen Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, was arrested by the Guwahati police on Friday, December 20, at Hatigaon point, amid their ongoing protest demanding justice for the death of Congress worker Mridul Islam during the Raj Bhavan protest.
Congress leaders Ripun Bora, Uday Bhanu Chib, senior spokesperson Ratul Kalita among other senior party leaders were also arrested. They are currently being kept at the 10th APBn, Kahilipara, Guwahati.
It must be mentioned that Congress worker Mridul Islam was killed during the Raj Bhavan protest on December 18, following which Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced a police probe into the incident.
Earlier today, heavy police was deployed at the Assam Secretariat as well as the Congress office in Guwahati’s Rajdhani Masjid area where a huge number of Congress workers had assembled to continue their ongoing protest.
Shortly after, a scuffle broke out as protesters defied police barricades and continued their march.
This is a developing story. Further details are awaited.
Meanwhile, the Guwahati police registered a suo-moto case following disturbances caused by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s Raj Bhavan Cholo protest on December 18.
The protest, which addressed issues such as smart meters, the Adani controversy, and the situation in Manipur, led to a confrontation between demonstrators and police.
