Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and MP Dilip Saikia on Saturday (March 22, 2025) directed party MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi to apologise for his aggressive conduct in the 126-member Assembly on March 21.
Mr. Kurmi, who represents the Mariani constituency, charged at independent MLA Akhil Gogoi during a heated discussion in the House. The latter, who represents the Sivasagar constituency, is the president of Raijor Dal, a regional party.
The display of aggression disrupted the House proceedings and drew widespread condemnation. The BJP legislator was slammed for breaching parliamentary decorum and undermining democratic values.
“Your act of leaving your seat and rushing towards a fellow legislator has drawn the attention of the people of Assam. Your conduct is contrary to the traditions of the Assembly,” Mr. Saikia said in a letter to his party MLA.
He said the BJP was an organisation guided and nurtured by strict discipline and a unique ideology. “We uphold patience, restraint and, when necessary, principled ideological battles as part of our ethos,” he added.
The State BJP chief acknowledged Mr. Kurmi’s apology in the House but said he needed to say sorry to the people of Assam. He also cautioned the MLA against repeating such behaviour.
