Assam Athletes Poised For Success At 38th National Games, Says Sarbananda Sonowal

Guwahati, Jan 20: The Assam contingent is ready to compete in the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, with a send-off and kit unveiling ceremony held at Sarusajal Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday. The event was attended by Union Minister and President of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA), Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Assam Ministers Nandita Garlosa, Pijush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baruah, and AOA General Secretary Lakhya Konwar.

Sonowal addressed the athletes, praising Assam’s growing sports talent and calling the state an “emerging powerhouse of sports.” He expressed confidence that the athletes would deliver outstanding performances and bring glory to Assam, urging them to compete with dedication, discipline, and focus. “I believe our athletes will showcase their indomitable spirit and achieve stellar results,” Sonowal said.

Citing Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the cultural icon of Assam, Sonowal emphasized the unifying power of sports in promoting peace and personal excellence. He noted that events like the National Games offer athletes a platform to demonstrate their talent and contribute to the advancement of sports in Assam.

Sonowal also highlighted Assam’s significant strides in sports, referencing major events hosted by the state, including the South Asian Games, Khelo India Youth Games, FIFA U-17 World Cup matches, and AIBA Youth Women’s World Boxing Championship. He said these milestones have cemented Assam’s place as a key player in the nation’s sports landscape.

The Union Minister further commended the Assam Olympic Association’s efforts, including the successful 2022 Assam Youth Olympics, which helped identify and nurture young talent across the state. “We are committed to providing the best training and support to our athletes,” Sonowal added, expressing optimism that the Assam contingent will exceed its previous medal tally at the National Games.

In closing, Sonowal stressed the broader role of sports in national development, noting that nations excelling in sports often thrive in other sectors as well. He expressed confidence that Assam’s athletes would continue to shine, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a leader in Indian sports.
