As summer sets in, peak load of power and energy consumption continues to soar in Telangana

HYDERABAD

Energy demand along with peak load of power in Telangana has been constantly soaring for the last 20 days as the summer season is setting in and the need for cooling, air-conditioning, is increasing. The peak load of power on the transmission system crossed 16,300 megawatt on Friday (February 21, 2025) and the consumption of energy was recorded at 315 million units.

Southern Discom contributing lion’s share to the peak load

The Southern Discom area, which comprises Greater Hyderabad, with 10,400 MW is contributing lion’s share to the peak load of about 16,300 MW. According to the officials of TG-Transco and Discoms, the peak load of power of over 15,000 MW everyday was recorded since February 3. Last year, the loads of over 15,000 MW were recorded only on three days in February (29 days).

Even in March last year, the 15,000-plus MW loads were recorded only on 13 days with a maximum of 15,623 on March 8, the highest-ever till it was surpassed on February 5 this year with the peak load clocking at 15,644 MW.

Energy consumption record

Energy consumption too surpassed the records this February: the highest-ever of 311.04 MU recorded on March 13 last year was surpassed on February 19 with the consumption recorded at 311.96 MU with the peak load breaking the 16,000 MW barrier (16,140 MW).

On Friday (February 20, 2025) the energy consumed in the State was 314.86 MU and the peak load was 16,289 MW. According to the officials, the agriculture and commercial sectors are driving both the peak loads and energy consumption now and the peak loads are expected to cross the 17,000 MW barrier sooner than later, if the mercury keeps soaring as it has been doing for the last two weeks.
