The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has constituted a committee to study all aspects of the Polavaram project and the issues faced by the displaced families.
In a statement on Saturday (February 22), the party said that the former Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had considered the Polavaram project as the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh and, as part of his government’s Jalayagnam initiative, he ensured that 33% of the project was completed by 2014.
The project had led to displacement of approximately 56,000 families, affecting nearly 2 lakh people, the party said, adding that it would fight on behalf of the people of the State, particularly against the Central government’s decision to reduce the project height, which could impact its effectiveness, the statement said.
Under the leadership of APCC president Y.S. Sharmila, the eight-member committee would visit every village in the Rampachodavaram and Polavaram constituencies, conduct a thorough study, and prepare a comprehensive report.
The committee would have APCC vice-president S. Martin Luther as chairman and State spokesperson N. Kiran Kumar Reddy as vice-chairman. It would have as members T.K. Visweswara Reddy from Rajamahendravaram DCC, Bullibabu from ASR DCC, R. Rammohan Rao from Eluru DCC, G. Satyendra, APCC State general secretary, Ramalakshmi from Rampachodavaram, and B. Vijaya Bhaskar from Polavaram.
