The recently released season of Paatal Lok has been garnering praise from both fans and critics, especially for its intense screenplay and Jaideep Ahlawat’s standout performance. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap also shared his thoughts on the series in a heartfelt social media post. He lauded the team and the actors for their authenticity and stellar performances, quoting South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s Academy Award-winning acceptance speech for Parasite, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”
Anurag Kashyap then applauded Pataal Lok creator Sudip Sharma and director Avinash Arun Dhaware for the beautiful depiction of the depths of human darkness. “Many moons ago, when we were all part of the, birth of long-form in India and were proudly displaying the tag of “look what we did with Sacred Games” dropped a powerful, bleak, chronicling of our lower depths, Pataal lok created by Sudip Sharma and one of the directors being Avinash Arun Dhaware I always believed it was peak writing, directing, performance and can’t be outdone. I couldn’t have been more wrong (sic).”
Moving further, Anurag admitted to being drawn into the world of Hathi Ram Choudhary – played to perfection by Jaideep Ahlawat. “The opening sequence of Jonathan Thom’s body being found just took my remaining sleep away and I got sucked into the world of Hathi Ram Choudhary so fast like it was a quicksand. The depths of human darkness that he dwells into, always looking for some hope that will and won’t come by.”
“It’s a thriller, a mystery, it’s dark, set in a region which we know of but don’t pay attention to, armed by very poignant writing, no holding back the punches, mirroring or hypocrisy, showing us the darkness that resides collectively within us as a society, like Hathiram says ‘main Pataal Lok ka permanent niwasi hoo’ (sic),” added the ace director in his caption.
Paatal Lok Season 2, directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware and written, created and executive-produced by Sudip Sharma, is now streaming on Prime Video. The new season brings back Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishwak Singh and Gul Panag in their original roles while adding fresh faces to the cast, including Tillotama Shome, Nagesh Kukunoor and Jahnu Barua.
