Anti-Waqf law protests will not be allowed: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (April 15, 2025) said his government would not allow any protest or demonstration against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in any public place.

He advised organisations such as the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) to challenge the amended law in the Supreme Court and not spill their anger on the streets.

“The matter is in the Supreme Court. If anyone has anything against or for the Waqf Act, he or she can approach the apex court,” Mr. Sarma told journalists.

“If some people take to the roads opposing the Act, others supporting it will do the same, leading to fights. We don’t want any conflict in Assam. We all must maintain our brotherly relationship and take the State forward,” he said.

The Chief Minister said there was no point in discussing the Waqf Act with the AAMSU or any other Muslim organisation. “Since the matter is already in the Supreme Court, let the judges discuss,” he added.

The police detained scores of protesters in some parts of central and western Assam a week ago. The protestors were heading to Guwahati to take part in an AAMSU-organised demonstration against the amended Waqf Act in Guwahati.

On Sunday, a rally against the Act in southern Assam’s Silchar town turned violent with the protestors pelting stones on the security personnel.
