An Air India Express flight from Delhi to Guwahati was diverted to Kolkata on Sunday afternoon after a potential bird-hit situation was detected just moments before its scheduled landing at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati.
The Airbus A320, carrying 179 passengers, encountered a flock of birds while descending towards Guwahati. To ensure passenger safety, the pilot made the decision to divert the flight to Kolkata, following standard safety protocols. The aircraft landed in Kolkata at 4:12 pm, about an hour after the diversion, causing a two-hour delay from its original 3:15 pm landing time.
The flight continued on its route to Dimapur, Nagaland, after departing Kolkata at 4:50 pm. A Guwahati airport official confirmed there were no technical issues or fuel shortages involved, and the diversion was solely precautionary.
This incident follows a recent series of fog-related disruptions at Guwahati airport, including the cancellation of 16 flights.
