Who needs an Oscar nomination when you can be the night’s biggest talking point just by showing up in gym shorts? Adam Sandler proved once again that red carpets and tuxedos aren’t his thing when he crashed the 97th Academy Awards in the most Sandler way possible— casually dressed and completely unbothered. The night’s host, Conan O’Brien, wasted no time taking aim at the Uncut Gems star’s laid-back fashion sense. Spotting Sandler in the audience, he called him out with a classic late-night zinger.
“Adam, what are you wearing? You’re dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 am,” O’Brien teased.
The room erupted in laughter, but Sandler wasn’t about to let it slide without a response.
“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” he fired back. “I like the way I look. Because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear and what I don’t wear. My snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers!” he added.
And just like that, in a move that was equal parts protest and performance art, Sandler decided to make an exit. The audience groaned as he got up to leave, but not before making one last memorable interruption.
“Chalamet!” he suddenly bellowed, making a beeline for A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet. The actor, looking sharp in his yellow ensemble, barely had time to react before Sandler engulfed him in a bear hug, drawing fresh laughter from the crowd.
But Sandler wasn’t done just yet. As he headed out, he turned back and issued an unexpected invitation to Hollywood’s elite.
“Midnight tipoff at Veteran Park – five-on-five basketball! The guy from…‘Nosterafu,’” he announced, stumbling over the horror film’s actual title.
Meanwhile, O’Brien continued his monologue, seamlessly transitioning into jokes about the evening’s top contenders. His opening even featured a surreal skit where he seemingly emerged from Demi Moore’s back – a nod to The Substance, one of the night’s most talked-about nominees. Held on 2nd March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the 97th Academy Awards had barely begun and Adam Sandler had already delivered the night’s most unexpected highlight. No award necessary – he had won the internet yet again.
