A Pune-based activist has demanded a First Information Report (FIR) to be filed against singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya for his alleged derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi. As reported by PTI, the activist approached Pune Police on Wednesday with a plea seeking registration of an FIR against the singer.

The complainant claimed that Bhattacharya insulted the Mahatma by stating that `Gandhi was not the father of nation of India but he was the father of nation of Pakistan’. He also called Abhijeet’s remark “foolish” and argued that it shows his hatred towards the freedom fighter. The activist also accused the singer of “defaming, insulting Mahatma Gandhi and creating a rift in society.”

His lawyer also stated that Deshpande submitted his application to the Deccan-Gymkhana police station. However, a police official said that the complaint was yet to reach them.

What Did Abhijeet Bhattacharya Say?

Earlier this month, Abhijeet Bhattacharya stirred a controversy when he called Gandhi ‘Father of Pakistan’. “Music composer RD Burman was bigger than Mahatma Gandhi. Like Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation, RD Burman was the father of the nation in the world of music,” the singer said as quoted by Free Press Journal.

“Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation for Pakistan and not India. India already existed, Pakistan was carved out of India later. Gandhi has been mistakenly called the father of the nation for India. He was the one responsible for the existence of Pakistan,” he added.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya is a popular singer who is known for songs like, Biwi No. 1, Main Khiladi, Chunnari Chunnari, Baadshah O Baadshah, Dhoom TaanaJoru Ka Ghulam and Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon among others.
