Just when A$AP Rocky thought his legal woes were behind him, a new lawsuit is on the horizon once again. The American rapper, born Rakim Mayers, was acquitted of felony charges in his 2021 shooting case in a Los Angeles court on February 18. Less than two weeks later, his accuser and former friend Terrell Ephron (also known as A$AP Relli) set the record straight that he still intends to press forward with his civil lawsuit against the 36-year-old rapper.
At a recent court hearing in downtown LA, the former A$AP Mob member’s attorney, Melissa Mikail, confirmed that her client will still be pursuing the assault and battery lawsuit against Rocky. As reported by Rolling Stone, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William Fahey lifted a hold on the case on February 26. Now, the case is set for a trial on January 12, 2026. Terrell filed the case against Rocky in August 2022.
“We intend to continue litigating this case. The standard in a criminal case is much higher than the preponderance of the evidence standard in a civil matter. We still believe that our claims have merit, and we intend on fully litigating them,” Terrell’s lawyer told the court at the hearing. On the other hand, Rocky’s legal team believes that their case has no merit. His attorney, James Sargent, argued, “My position is there’s no longer a basis for them. Mr. Ephron testified in the criminal case as to the facts and circumstances. The jury’s acquittal speaks volumes as to how they valued that testimonial evidence.”
The dispute between Rocky and Relli stems from an altercation that took place on November 6, 2021, on the corner of Selma Avenue and Vista Del Mar Avenue. Relli claims that Rocky pulled out a handgun and fired at him, allegedly grazing his hand, but Rocky denied the allegations. Rocky’s defence argued that he fired a prop gun with blanks, which he had taken from a music video set months earlier for protection.
Despite the high-stakes trial, the 36-year-old rapper maintained his innocence throughout, even turning down a plea deal that would have landed him behind bars for 180 days. In the end, the jury sided with Rocky, clearing him of all charges. When the not-guilty verdict was read, the rapper even celebrated the moment in the courtroom by embracing his partner, Rihanna.
The next court hearing for the civil case is scheduled for May 28, where more details on the case’s progress will be revealed.
