An alliance of regional and Left Front parties in Assam condemned the attack on several Congress leaders, including MP Pradyut Bordoloi and MLA Sibamoni Bora, in Nagaon district’s Dhing on Sunday (April 27, 2025) night.

The Axom Sommilito Morcha (ASOM) said the incident was a direct outcome of the culture of political violence and vendetta fostered by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Rajya Sabha member Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, the president of the alliance, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad and the general secretary of the alliance, said in a joint statement on Monday said the State was never associated with political violence.

“Our political history has been marked by healthy competition, rivalry, and friendship. The environment of treating political opponents as enemies was something we only read about happening in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and other States. Sadly, thanks to the BJP and Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government, that culture has now been imported into Assam,” they said.

The alliance leaders alleged that the Chief Minister, along with the Assam police, has been encouraging political intolerance in Assam. They argued that had law enforcement taken strong and prompt action against earlier incidents of sporadic political violence, such episodes would not have escalated.

“By attempting to justify or incite such incidents, even subtly, the Chief Minister makes it clear that there are hidden political motives behind these attacks,” Mr Bhuyan and Mr Gogoi said, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attack.

Assam’s Information Minister Pijush Hazarika rejected the allegations linking the BJP to the Dhing incident.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the attack stemmed from financial disputes and not from any political vendetta involving the BJP. The area where the incident took place is predominantly a Congress stronghold,” he said.

Pointing out that the Chief Minister ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, Mr Hazarika said: “We appeal to everyone to refrain from politicising such incidents and hope that such unfortunate events are never repeated.”

Meanwhile, the Assam police identified Imdadul Islam, who was expelled from Congress two days before the incident, as the main accused behind the attack on the vehicles of Mr Bordoloi, Ms Bora, and other Congress leaders. EOM
