Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday (April 15, 2025) that Assamese would be the compulsory official language for all government notifications, orders and acts in the State. The order signed by the Governor comes into effect on Tuesday to mark the Assamese New Year.

“In the districts of Barak Valley and BTR, Bengali and Bodo languages shall be used respectively,” he added in his X post.

The translation work shall be undertaken with the assistance of language departments of the Universities,” it said.

However, the notification also mentioned exceptions where English would be used, including communication with the Central government and other State governments.

“In the event of any ambiguity, discrepancy, or requirement of legal interpretation, the English version of such laws, Notifications, Rules, Regulations, Ordinance shall prevail.

“The English language shall continue to be used for communication with the Government of India, Central Government Offices and other State Governments establishments,” said the order.

All reports and correspondences with courts would also be in English.

The Government has also directed officials to use the Anuvaad Bhashini app to translate from English to Assamese, Bengali and Bodo language.
