Priyanka Chopra was crowned Miss World In 2000 after winning the Miss India title in the same year. The actress was just 18 years old when she became the fifth Miss World from India. At a time when the whole world was praising Priyanka Chopra, she received an unpleasant reaction from her hometown Bareilly. Priyanka’s mother Madhu Chopra has opened up on being upset about not receiving enough support from Bareilly. In a recent interview with Lehren TV, Madhu recalled returning to Bareilly after Priyanka’s Miss World win, only to receive a bitter welcome.
Madhu revealed, “Jo Bareilly mein humara reception hua that was not kind at all. The state machinery said ye naari shoshan hain, hum log isko nahi accept karenge. Unka funda hai ki jis seher se aayi hain usi seher pe uska welcome hoga (The state apparatus declared that this was female exploitation and that it would not be tolerated. The winner of Miss World had to return to her hometown for a ceremonial celebration).”
Madhu Chopra further revealed that even after permission from the chief minister, the state machinery gave excuses for not welcoming her. “Toh ye tha ki Bareilly jana hain aur Bareilly ne Chief Minister ke office se manaya tha… Toh we can’t have her here law and order ka issue, kuch kuch toh bola tha, We were very upset.” She added.
Madhu Chopra claims that the Bareilly authorities forbade Priyanka’s homecoming celebrations from being extravagant. Rather, a modest gathering was planned in the army zone, where her father was stationed at the time. However, she received a heartfelt reaction from the entertainment industry in Mumbai. Filmmakers and producers saw her potential and gave her a chance in Bollywood.
