For years, fans have hoped for a sequel to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD), but writer Reema Kagti feels differently. In a recent interview with Zoom, the filmmaker addressed the demand for ZNMD 2, making it clear that she and co-writer Zoya Akhtar have no plans to revisit the film—unless they have a truly compelling idea.
“People might think I’m being a bit pompous because it is our film, but I really feel, because of the pressure on us to write Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2, maybe that’s a film we should leave alone till we get a really good idea,” Reema stated.
Beyond sequels, Reema also spoke about an industry-wide issue: the lack of proper credit for writers and crew members. She pointed out that it’s not just writers but also key crew members and department heads who often go unacknowledged.
“Nowadays, forget writers, even crew, HODs, key crew are not getting credits. That is something very frightening when you do not credit people for their work,” she said. Addressing the common misconception that brainstorming with a writer is the same as actually writing the script, she added, “You are taking credit from somebody who has written. We need to fix things like this.”
While Reema and Zoya may not be working on a ZNMD sequel yet, the film remains close to fans’ hearts. Recently, Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar reunited in a fun Instagram video, fuelling speculation about a possible sequel.
In the clip, the trio sat at a restaurant, staring at a copy of The Three Musketeers. Hrithik reacted with “Unbelievable,” while Farhan added, “Outstanding.” The post, set to the film’s iconic song Señorita, was captioned by Farhan as, “@zoieakhtar do you see the signs??” Zoya playfully responded, “Yes, the universe is speaking to me.”
Directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Excel Entertainment, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) starred Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, and Kalki Koechlin. The road-trip film, which explored friendship, love, and self-discovery, remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved classics. Whether a sequel will ever materialise remains uncertain, but for now, Reema believes some stories are best left untouched.
