Protesting farmers in Punjab put Feb. 25 ‘Delhi march’ on hold

Farmers and farm-labourers groups protesting in Punjab over their long pending demands on Monday (February 24, 2025) announced that they would put on hold their proposed ‘Delhi march’, slated for February 25 in the wake of the next meeting with the Centre. The meeting will be held on March 19.

In Amritsar, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said “We have decided to postpone the foot march towards the national capital on February 25 in the wake of the next meeting with the Central government meeting scheduled for March 19.”

Farmers have been demanding a legal guarantee for purchasing their crops at minimum support price and farm loan waivers, among other demands. Groups of farmers under the banner of the KMM and SKM (Non-Political) — the two umbrella bodies spearheading the agitation in Punjab — have been camping at Shambhu-Ambala and Khanauri-Jind (the inter-State boundaries between Haryana and Punjab) since February 13, 2024, after they were stopped from entering Haryana and marching to Delhi.

Mr. Pandher, who is coordinator of KMM, also urged the Aam Aadmi Party government in the State to to pass a resolution in the ongoing session of the Punjab Assembly in support of the 12 demands of the farmers. “Besides, the House should pass a resolution against the draft National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing as well and send it to the Centre,” he added.
