National Science Day observed - The Hindu

Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman S. Somanath inaugurated the National Science Day celebrations organised by the Kerala Academy of Sciences (KAS) at Mar Ivanios College on Monday.

The observance, based on the theme ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat’, featured discussions on India’s scientific progress, industry-academia collaboration and the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies in human welfare.

Dr. Somanath emphasised the growing relevance of science and technology, and stressed the need for stronger industry collaboration to accelerate scientific progress.

KAS president G.M. Nair delivered the presidential address. The Chief Minister’s scientific advisor, M. Chandradathan, reiterated the importance of bridging scientific research with real-world applications, fostering innovation and driving economic growth.

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology Director Sanjay Behari spoke about the importance of adopting a scientific mindset. He emphasised rational thinking, curiosity and an open mindset as key drivers for scientific discoveries and technological advancements.

Former executive vice-president of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment Suresh Das urged scientists to push the boundaries of traditional research and explore multidisciplinary approaches to tackle global challenges.

The Science Day address was delivered by K. George Thomas, Professor, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram, where he discussed the impact of the Raman Effect on modern scientific progress. Auxiliary Bishop of the Major Archeparchy of Thiruvananthapuram, Mathews Mar Polycarpos, delivered the benedictory address.
