The trailer for Emmy-nominated filmmaker Ram Madhvani’s upcoming series, The Waking of a Nation, has been unveiled, offering a gripping look into one of India’s darkest historical chapters—the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The show sheds light on the brutal killing of innocent civilians by British officials in Punjab and the ensuing fight for justice.

Released on Monday, February 24, the trailer features Mismatched actor Taaruk Raina as Kantilal Sahni, a young lawyer caught in a web of colonial conspiracy. As tensions rise following the massacre, protests erupt across the nation, setting the stage for Sahni’s quest to expose the truth behind the British government’s actions.

The series is expected to reexamine the events through the lens of the Hunter Commission’s investigation, offering a fresh perspective on the historic tragedy.

The trailer also contains dramatic visuals of the killings, followed by the protests and a lot of courtroom action as the series takes on the recreation of the 1919 massacre.

“Find out the conspiracy behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, as a nation awakens,” the makers shared the trailer with the message. While Taaruk Raina takes up the lead role as the lawyer heading the investigation, others featured are Nikita Dutta, Sahil Mehta and Bhawsheel Singh Sahni.

Madhvani, who created, directed and co-produced The Waking of a Nation, while Shantanu Srivastava and Shatrujeet Nath co-wrote the investigative drama. “As the Hunter Commission distorts history to serve the ruling empire, Kantilal grapples with racism, erasure and the fight for truth. Bound by an unshakable childhood friendship, Kantilal and his companions, despite clashing ideologies, unravel a conspiracy that reshapes their fate. In a world where justice is a mirage, will they expose the hidden truths or be consumed by them?” the official synopsis reads.

Speaking on the same, director Ram Madhvani in a statement shared that he has always been interested in colonialism and the issues of racism and prejudice. “As I was contemplating my next project, I knew it had to be rooted in our past, in the British Raj and our freedom struggle. That’s when the idea for The Waking of a Nation came to life,” he added, as quoted by OTTPlay.

The show is slated to release on Sony LIV on March 7.
