Salman Khan’s 2007 film Marigold, directed by Willard Carroll and co-starring Ali Larter, earned only Rs 2 crore globally due to a weak script and cast, leading to poor reviews.
Salman Khan’s Marigold released in 2007.
When Salman Khan announces a film, you know it’s going to draw a huge footfall to the theatres. Over the years, Bollywood’s Bhaijaan has positioned himself as one of the most bankable actors in the industry. While Salman has majorly tasted success in his career, he did face some pitfalls along the way. Speaking of flops, let’s take a moment to talk about the superstar’s 2007 film, Marigold.
Though made with a Hollywood attraction, Marigold failed to perform at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 19 crore, it earned a meagre Rs 2 crore globally in its entirety. The film had director Willard Carroll at the helm and American actress Ali Larter marking her Bollywood debut.
Carroll, known for films such as The Runestone, Playing by Heart, and Tom’s Midnight Garden, left the filmmaking business altogether after Marigold tanked. However, it is not known whether the film’s flop drove his decision.
Not just him, actress Ali Larter, a rather well-known face in Hollywood, took a break from Hindi films after her debut. However, she did have her Hollywood breakthrough the same year with Resident Evil: Extinction. She has since been a part of both the sequels, but saw little success outside of that. Larter was previously known for playing key characters in Legally Blonde, Final Destination, and the TV show Heroes.
What didn’t work for Marigold
Salman Khan‘s Marigold failed to perform at the box office owing to a weak script and a weak supporting cast. Apart from this, it released a week after Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! India, which was still going strong at the box office.
Marigold also opened to poor reviews. While the Hollywood concept didn’t quite sit well with the Indian audience, the Westerners found the film ‘less desi’, resulting in its box office fail. Many also found Salman’s Hollywood experiment “boring”. The film has an overall rating of 4.8/10 on IMDb and 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
