Assam: Gaurav Gogoi Hits Back At Himanta Biswa Sarma Over Controversial Investigation

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has strongly criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following the ongoing investigation into alleged links between Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheik, as well as George Soros’ Open Society.

Gogoi responded by claiming that the Assam government is entitled to conduct its inquiry, but asserted that the real reason behind the investigation is Sarma’s fear of losing power in the 2026 Assembly elections. He further stated that Sarma would “have to face justice” from the people of Assam.

In a statement on social media, Gogoi wrote, “The BJP government in Assam can conduct their enquiry. Every Assamese person knows the real reason behind recent developments. Himanta Biswa Sarma is afraid that he will lose his chair and will have to face justice from the people of Assam after the 2026 assembly elections.”

The controversy erupted after Assam Police formed a Special Investigation Taskforce (SIT) to probe Sheik’s alleged connections to Gaurav Gogoi’s wife. Chief Minister Sarma shared the SIT order on social media, emphasizing that the investigation would be “professional and completely objective.”

An FIR was registered against Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and others under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, as announced by Sarma earlier on Monday. The FIR follows a decision made by the state Cabinet on February 16.

The matter has escalated into a significant political controversy, with both sides exchanging sharp statements.
