Acclaimed filmmaker Ram Madhvani, known for Aarya, is set to release his latest period drama series, The Waking of a Nation, starring Taaruk Raina and Nikita Dutta in the lead roles. Produced by Ram Madhvani Films, this historical web series unravels the tragic mystery surrounding the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919. Shedding light on colonial-era injustices, the series will premiere on the OTT platform SonyLIV on March 7.
“You know about the massacre, but you don’t know about the conspiracy,” the makers captioned the teaser while sharing the first look of the series.
The teaser for The Waking of a Nation opens with Mismatched actor Taaruk Raina portraying the fearless lawyer Kantilal, who fights against racism while attempting to uncover the conspiracy behind the horrific massacre. The six-episode series showcases striking visuals and powerful dialogues, setting the stage for an intense courtroom drama. Co-written by Shantanu Srivastava, Shatrujeet Nath, and Ram Madhvani, the series builds intrigue around the lesser-known truths of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy.
“I have always been deeply interested in colonialism and, by extension, the issues of racism and prejudice,” said creator and director Ram Madhvani in a statement.
“I have always been troubled by questions of cultural, linguistic, social, and artistic colonialism. I realized that my next project had to be rooted in our history—the British Raj and our fight for independence. That’s when the concept for The Waking of a Nation was born. Thanks to SonyLIV, we now have a compelling show that blends a courtroom drama with the moving story of three friends and how India became India,” he added.
Co-produced by Sidhu Manpreet, Ankita Batra, and Udayan Baijal, The Waking of a Nation will be available for streaming on SonyLIV starting March 7. Alongside Taaruk Raina and Nikita Dutta, the series, based on true events, features Sahil Mehta, Bhawsheel Singh, Alex Reece and Paul McEwan in pivotal roles.
Ram Madhvani is renowned for directing Dhamaka, the Kartik Aaryan-led thriller, the Sushmita Sen-starring series Aarya, and the critically acclaimed Neerja, starring Sonam Kapoor.
