Several videos of the police pulling the plug on his jamming session at Church Street went viral on social media. Now, hours after the incident, Ed Sheeran has himself shared a clarification on social media, revealing that he had permission to busk, and that he didn’t just randomly turn up at the spot.
Ahead of Ed Sheeran’s concert at NICE Grounds, Bengaluru, the singer took to his Instagram story, and clarified, “We had permission to busk btw, hence us playing in that exact spot, was planned out before, it wasn’t just us randomly turning up. Ed Sheeran was midway into the performance of his popular track ‘Shape Of You’ when the Bengaluru Police halted the performance. Earlier, the Bengaluru City Police clarified their stance, stating that while they hold immense respect for artists and their contributions, public performances, especially those attracting large crowds, require prior authorization to ensure safety and order. An official remarked, “Our primary concern is the safety of both the artist and the public. Unauthorized gatherings can pose significant challenges in crowd management and security.”
AR Rahman’s son AR Ameen reacted to Ed Sheeran’s performance abruptly being stopped by the police. In his Instagram story, he wrote, “Stopping Ed from performing on the streets of Bangalore is a huge disrespect to a global music legend. Artists bring joy and unity through their craft, and such moments should be celebrated, not shut down. This is a loss for the city and its people.”
Ed Sheeran was in Bengaluru as part of his “+-=÷x Tour,” with scheduled performances at NICE Grounds on February 8 and 9, 2025. The tour, inspired by his chart-topping albums, promised a setlist featuring global hits and had generated significant excitement among fans in the city.
