Tamil Nadu is one of the frontrunners when it comes to creating infrastructure needed to encourage adoption of more electric vehicles (EV) and manufacturing, according to Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, replying to DMK MP Kanimozhi NVN Somu’s question in Rajya Sabha on February 7 in New Delhi.

Uttar Pradesh leads in the number of EV charging stations installed by Oil Marketing Companies with 2,561 stations. In response to Dr. Kanimozhi’s question on the status of implementation of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMP) in India and the details of government incentives and policies to encourage EV adoption and manufacturing, Mr. Varma said that the total number of EV charging stations installed by Oil Marketing Companies from their own funds were — Uttar Pradesh with 2,561, Maharashtra with 1,595, Karnataka with 1,516, Rajasthan with 1,482 and Tamil Nadu with 1,448.

“As part of NEMMP 2020, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) implemented the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme in 2015 to promote the adoption of electric/hybrid vehicles.”

Phase-I was implemented up to 31 March, 2019, with a budget of ₹895 crore. Phase-II was implemented for five years from 1 April 2019, with an outlay of ₹11,500 crore. Mr. Varma further said that Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for automobile and auto component industry in India to enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities for advanced automotive technology products with a budget layout of ₹25,938 crore and PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) for its manufacture with a budget layout of ₹18,100 crore have been implemented.

“PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-Drive) scheme, Pm-eBus Sewa-Payment security Mechanism (PSM) scheme, Promotion of Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India scheme have been implemented. Other Ministries of Government of India are also taking initiatives to promote EVs such as Road Tax Exemption and Green License,” he said.
