American rapper Kendrick Lamar is set to share the stage with SZA at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, February 9, at Caesars Superdome. Ahead of the much-anticipated performance, the Money Trees singer appeared at a press conference for Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show where he heaped praise on the Kill Bill artist SZA and looked back at her musical journey.
As per a People report, Lamar was asked whether the two music sensations got in touch before the performance. He noted that they have spoken to each other amidst the preparations such as production and rehearsals. However, they “haven’t really got a chance to settle into the moment.”
Regardless, the rapper noted that he takes great pride in watching her professional growth. The 37-year-old said that he finally sees how other fans and individuals must perceive his journey because he witnessed SZA’s from Day one, how she used to constantly write and discard songs.
He said, “I’ve seen her, day one, coming in the studio and writing songs, throwing away songs, writing another song, throwing away songs.”
The Backseat Freestyle singer further added that he understood SZA’s artistic process even then and took inspiration in her vigour ‘to be great’ by the constant songwriting. He said, “She always had it and I’m just honored to be next to her talent.”
Meanwhile, Lamar won big at the 2025 Grammy Awards held on February 2. He took home 5 Grammys including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Not Like Us.
The rapper dedicated his big win to West Coast artists’ that inspired him throughout his musical journey. He noted that at the end of the day, there is nothing more powerful than rap music. “I don’t care what it is. We are the culture that’s gonna always stay here and live forever,” he said. In a piece of advice to young musicians, the Damn vocalist reminded them to always respect their culture and the art form. “I saw a respect the art form, get you where you need to go, salute, I appreciate y’all, I love y’all,” he signed off.
