Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard has alleged that actress Karla Sofía Gascón is playing the victim. Addressing the controversy surrounding the movie and the actress, Audiard stated that he has not spoken to Karla Sofía since her contentious remarks.

“The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere we had on set—it was all based on trust,” Audiard told Deadline while discussing the controversy.

Following her award-season nominations, the actress made controversial remarks that offended multiple communities. Karla Sofía expressed discriminatory views toward Muslims, people of colour and greater diversity at the Oscars. Despite the backlash, the film’s director and cast have continued promoting the movie, which has received positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

Recently, Jacques Audiard expressed his disappointment over Karla Sofía’s remarks and the ongoing controversy. “Unfortunately, this situation is taking up all the space, and that makes me very sad,” Audiard told Deadline.

“It’s very hard for me to reflect on the work I did with Karla Sofía. The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere we had on set. It was all built on trust,” he added.

He also revealed that the actress’s statements have strained their friendship. “When you have that kind of relationship and then suddenly you read something hateful that the person has said, something truly inexcusable, of course, that relationship is affected. It feels like falling into a hole,” he explained.

Audiard went on to say that he does not understand Karla Sofía’s intentions or the reasoning behind her remarks. “She’s really playing the victim,” the director said. He believes the actress sees herself as the victim and fails to recognise that words can cause real harm.

Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez won the Best Actress award for its female ensemble and the Jury Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival during its international premiere on May 18, 2024. After its theatrical release in France, the film is now streaming on Netflix.
