Anantapur district police decided to rope in social media influencers to create awareness among the people about cybercrimes, road safety and the ill-effects of drug consumption.

Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Jagadeesh on Thursday held a meeting with social media influencers and asked them to take lead in creating awareness on three issues — cybercrimes, road safety, and drug abuse. Mr. Jagadeesh said that the Police Department has been making efforts to reduce road accidents, prevent cybercrimes and drug abuse, and has decided to use social media as a platform to supplement their efforts.

The SP said that social media plays a major role in influencing the society and it could be used as a tool to reach out to people. “Some individuals have earned a lot of fans with their innovative videos. Such YouTubers should come up with innovative reels, posts, and status’ videos on road safety, cybercrimes and drug abuse as part of social responsibility,” he said.

Mr. Jagadeesh said that the analysis of the crime in the past three years showed that victims have lost more money in cyber frauds rather than in thefts. “Cybercrimes are increasing due to lack of awareness. Social media influencers should make posts or reels educating people about digital arrest, courier scams, credit card frauds and others,” he said.

Nearly 150 social media influencers participated in the programme.
