Panneerselvam asks T.N. govt. to disband pension panel

The ADMK Workers’ Rights Retrieval Committee coordinator and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Thursday (February 6, 2025) dubbed the constitution of a three-member panel by the Tamil Nadu government to study three pension schemes as an “act of deceiving” government employees.

Referring to the formation of the panel to study the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), and Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and make recommendations to the government, Mr. Panneerselvam, in a statement, contended that if the idea was to frame a pension scheme after taking into account finances of the government, then the OPS would not be restored. “This [the panel] is unnecessary. It has been the demand of the government staff to go back to the Old Pension Scheme. This was what the DMK had promised in the [2021 Assembly] election manifesto.”

As there was no need for the panel to extend the coverage of the OPS to those who joined the service after 2003 on the lines of what was being implemented for the pre-2003 employees, the State government should disband the committee immediately, Mr. Panneerselvam added.
