Netflix recently teased its 2025 content lineup, which includes Building the Band, a reality show featuring the late Liam Payne of One Direction. This show was one of his final projects before his untimely death on October 16, 2024, after he tragically fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Following his passing, Netflix hesitated to move forward with the release, staying in close contact with Payne’s family to ensure their approval before proceeding. While the family felt the show portrayed Liam in a positive light, they had not given their final approval and were surprised when Netflix announced the series.

An insider spoke to The Sun, revealing, “Netflix spoke to Liam’s family to make sure their feelings were taken into account before moving forward. The family felt the show was a celebration of Liam, showcasing him at his best as a true boyband star. However, they hadn’t yet given their final approval, and as far as they were concerned, they were still discussing the show’s direction. So, they were caught off guard by the announcement.”

Liam Payne took part in Building the Band, hosted by Backstreet Boys singer AJ MacLean, as a guest judge alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland. The former One Direction member finished filming his segment only a few months before he died at age of 31. Without his presence, it’s not clear how Netflix is planning to move forward.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix never planned to cancel the show, but their challenge was to figure out how to feature Payne following his death. During their recent presentation, Next on Netflix 2025, in LA, the streaming giant boss Brandon Riegg confirmed that discussions are ongoing about how Payne’s role will be handled, but no official details have been revealed yet.

For months, there was speculation that Liam Payne’s death was drug-related. Now, a recent BBC report confirmed that he died from polytrauma, which means multiple traumatic injuries to his body and organs. In connection with his death, five people have been taken into custody for further investigation.
