A tusker was found dead at Maragunda near Hanabalu in Sakaleshpura forest range on Friday.

The pachyderm is aged around 40. It is said the elephant died after suffering injuries in a fight with another tusker. The doctors have noticed marks of injuries on its body. The animal must have died a few days ago.

Sourabh Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, told The Hindu that the elephant was suspected to have died in an infight. “We have examined the carcass with a metal detector. According to preliminary examination, it died of natural causes. It had one tusk, and it is intact,” he said.

The doctors conducted the postmortem. “We have collected samples for further examination,” the officer added.
