Thirtyfive-year-old Penumalla Ramya Smruthi suffering from mental illness reportedly died on Monday while undergoing medical treatment at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Kakinada), a few days after she swallowed a feature phone.

The deceased is a native of Bommuru village in Rajamahendravaram rural mandal in East Godavari district. She had recently been admitted at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Rajamahendravaram for treatment due to her mental illness. 

“The patient allegedly swallowed a feature phone while being treated for mental illness in GGH-Rajamahendravaram, where doctors performed surgery on her for hypoxic injury and later referred her to GGH-Kakinada on January 25. The next day, she died while undergoing treatment with post-surgery complications,” GGH-Kakinada Superintendent Dr. Lavanya Kumari told The Hindu.  

The GGH-Kakinada authorities handed over the body to the family members of the deceased.
