Assam Government Unveils Major Reforms In Education And Pension Systems

Guwahati, Jan 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced a series of significant reforms aimed at transforming the state’s education sector and improving the welfare of government employees.

As part of the educational overhaul, CM Sarma revealed plans to set up modern, state-of-the-art schools in every Assembly constituency across Assam, with some constituencies set to receive multiple such institutions. These schools will be equipped with advanced facilities to enhance the overall quality of education in the state.

On the pension front, the Chief Minister confirmed the rollback of the New Pension Scheme (NPS), with the government set to implement the Central Unified Pension Scheme starting in April. Under the new scheme, employees with 25 years of service will be entitled to 50 percent of their last drawn salary, along with Dearness Allowance, as pension after retirement. Employees recruited before 2005, who were not part of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), will now be transitioned to OPS.

Additionally, CM Sarma announced plans to develop Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and Silchar into key urban centers, with Dibrugarh designated as the second capital of Assam. A new Assembly complex will be constructed in Dibrugarh by 2027 as part of the city’s transformation.

These initiatives reflect the Assam government’s commitment to improving education, pension benefits, and urban development across the state.
