Barpeta, Jan 24: The Barpeta District Jail in Assam has transformed into an agricultural hub, with inmates actively participating in multi-crop cultivation. Spanning 127 bighas (nearly 42 acres), the jail’s grounds are filled with crops such as mustard, fruit trees, vegetables, and even a mini bee farm. Rare and nutritious crops like apple berries are also being cultivated.
Currently housing 335 inmates, including 325 men and 10 women, the jail has a capacity of 413. This innovative approach not only promotes sustainable farming but also helps in the rehabilitation of prisoners, offering them valuable agricultural skills.
