Assam teacher experiences District Magistrate’s job for a day

A private school teacher almost donned a District Magistrate’s role for a day.

Mrinmoy Kalita, a science teacher, wrote to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma a few days ago, hoping to become a District Commissioner for a day and experience the responsibility. His wish was fulfilled on Friday (December 6, 2024).

“We received an instruction from the Chief Minister three days ago to organise an orientation programme for the teacher covering all the administrative, developmental, and regulatory activities. We facilitated the programme,” Varnali Deka, the Nalbari District Commissioner told The Hindu.

Apart from interacting with officials of all branches of administration, including the election office, Mr. Kalita was taken on field trips to experience how officials interact with the public and address grievances.

“It has been my dream to become a civil servant and I have been preparing for the civil service examinations alongside teaching at the (Assamese medium) Jatiya Bidyalaya in Nalbari’s Phuloguri,” he said.

“I am grateful to the Chief Minister and the Nalbari district authorities for allowing me to find out what it takes to be a District Commissioner. If I get through the civil service exams, I will have a head start over others with this experience,” he said.
